It is undeniable that formal education plays acentral role in delivering knowledge and information tolearners. Education functions to develop the nationalcharacter and civilization. Education at the elementaryschool level occupies the top ranks in the mental growthand development of its students, because since theelementary school level the students have known readingand writing, and basic lessons that will later becomeguidelines at the secondary school level. At this level thestudents will get to know the moral values in their lives, and know and understand language and how peoplecommunicate with each other in an acceptable way. Fromthe lens of the Indonesian culture, speaking using politeIJISRT20JAN023language will show true nature as an ethical, educated, andcultured human being who values as a good human being. The fourth-grade up to sixth-grade students are at thestages of systematic thinking ability since those studentscan already think concretely referring to the activities thatare being studied and done. The focus of the presentresearch was the fourth-grade ones as well as their teacheras the facilitator. This is because the students have justentered a period of concrete thinking. Speech act is one ofthe functional activities of humans as creatures of language, including an educator or teacher. Communication is thepillar of all activities carried out, without communicationthere will be no such thing as language. Teachers inIndonesia have a special position in the society. The specialposition is because the teacher is considered as someonewho is the smart, smart, wise, skilled, full of insight andmost experienced in the world of education. This research employed the theory formulated byAsim Gunarwan. It has completed all the things needed torefer to politeness. Gunarwan (1998: 263) suggestslanguage behavior by departing from the principle of thebalance of life of ethnic groups. This principle constitutesthe principle of harmony consisting of four maxims). Theyare (1) kurmat or respect, (2) andhap asor or humble, (3)empan papan or aware of the place and situation, and (4)tepa slira or tolerance.II.RESEARCH METHODA qualitative approach is an approach that alwaysrelates to and uses theories as its foundation. This researchemployed a qualitative descriptive approach. The source ofthe data was in the form of transcripts of learning takenfrom the dialogs when learning in primary school takesplace managed by the teacher. Then from the transcriptiondata the researcher identified words and sentences whichwere sorted and selected according to the four maximscontained in Asim Gunarwan's theory. It aims to determinethe level of use of politeness done by the teacher to thestudents during the learning process.www.ijisrt.com104

It indicated that the teacher as the object ofresearch and as the central object of the research carried outmore fulfillment of politeness than violation of politeness. This is in line with the theory used. Politeness is the mainthing that must be considered when communicating. Thechoice of words and the use of sentences in accordance withIJISRT20JAN023the place or situation accompanied by the accuracy ofattitude will make a two-way communication process canrun optimally. Based on the previously-formulated researchobjectives, it was found that the application of the principleof politeness in language was viewed from several aspectsbeing polite in complying with words and choosingsentences and being polite in behaving. Accordingly, whenlanguage politeness is applied in communication there willbe comfort between the speaker and the speech partner. With the application of polite communication patterns andwww.ijisrt.com106
